It is with the most profound sadness that the War Eagles share the passing of one of our recent alumni, Walterio Hendricks. Walterio was a graduate of the Class of 2024, and was well-loved by our staff and student community. Walterio was a kind, funny member of our student body, who never failed to make everyone smile every time he passed them in the hallway and gave them a high five and a big grin. He was filled with immense pride to be an LSD War Eagle, even checking on us after he graduated and telling us how he missed and loved LSD. He served the War Eagles football team and track team as a manager, and was a wonderful friend to all. Walterio always enjoyed finding a way to brighten everyone's day, and brought laughter through his frequent jokes and silliness. He was a true War Eagle at heart and we will miss him.

As we wrap up 2025 and look back at this year so far, one thing is clear: Louisiana School for the Deaf is GROWING!

We achieved our 2nd highest School Performance Score in more than 20 years.
Our Pre-K earned an EXCELLENT rating again.
We’ve seen high growth on NWEA MAP across multiple grade levels and content areas, beating the national norm for multiple cohorts.
We’ve been expanding dual credit opportunities so our students graduate with options.
Attendance is improving and instruction is strengthening.
And most importantly—our students are learning, growing, and believing in themselves! The best is yet to come.

From expanding our CTE programming to enhancing our library programming and book selections to increasing bilingual training for staff, to building partnerships with universities, community members, and Deaf organizations—we are so excited to see where LSD is going in 2026!

We are excited to celebrate multiple grade levels at the Louisiana School for the Deaf that exceeded the national norm for growth on the NWEA MAP assessment. From kindergarten through high school, many of our cohorts showed meaningful academic progress—proof that learning is happening every day when high expectations, strong instruction, and accessible language come together!

This growth reflects the hard work of our students, the dedication of our teachers and staff, and the powerful partnership we share with families. Congratulations, War Eagles! 🦅💚

As we enter a season of reflection, we want to pause and share our gratitude for the people who make the Louisiana School for the Deaf such a special place. Every day, our students inspire us with their curiosity, resilience, and joy, on a campus made especially for students just like them. Our staff shows unwavering dedication, creativity, and heart, with many Deaf adults pouring love and care into our future generations. And our families and community members partner with us, trust us, and stand beside us as we grow together.🦅 To our students, staff, families, and supporters across the state and beyond: Thank you. Last Friday, our high school civics classes had an unforgettable learning experience at the Louisiana State Capitol, made possible by the generosity of Senator Caleb Kleinpeter. Our students were welcomed for a personal tour that included the Senate Chamber, Senator Kleinpeter's office, the top floor observation deck, and other special spaces. Senator Kleinpeter, thank you for opening doors for our War Eagles! Your willingness to spend time with our students, listen to their ideas and perspectives, and consistently continue to learn about the Deaf community and Deaf education means more to us than words can express. Experiences with our community deepens understanding, builds confidence, and shows our students that their voices and experiences matter. We look forward to meeting more members of our community and spreading awareness around the state! 🦅 💚
