Athletics

The Louisiana for the Deaf believes athletics to be an integral part of the school's educational program, providing experiences to help young people grow physically, mentally, and emotionally. At LSD, students have a wonderful opportunity to participate in athletics with direct communication with their coaches and teammates.

The main objective is to instill in our student-athletes the concept that success is brought about by hard work, commitment, sacrifice, preparedness, and doing the best that one can do daily.

Participation in athletics is necessary for better health, physical fitness, and improved motor skills; but also promotes self-esteem, self-discipline, and the desire to excel. Respect for authority, respect for the rights of others, and the development of the highest ideals of fairness in human relationships are often the learning outcomes achieved through athletics. We believe these traits are carried over not only to classroom work but also throughout our students' lives.

While winning and the spirit of competition is an immediate objective in all athletic contests, we believe it is not an end in itself. At LSD, the desire to win is also used to pursue more important objectives and lessons like sportsmanship and fair play.

LSD is a full-fledged member of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA), where every 7th-12 grade deaf and hard-of-hearing student has an opportunity to participate in the following sports: volleyball, basketball, track, powerlifting, and cross country. LSD is also a proud member of the Mason-Dixon Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association and the National Deaf Interscholastic Athletic Association (NDIAA), where LSD also participates in cheerleading and 6-man/8-man football along with the sports mentioned above.
